At the European level, regulations are in place to coordinate health and pension insurance, and there is the European Health Insurance card (EHIC, in Austria referred to as e-card). Unemployment insurance within the European Union is also governed by provisions at the European level. However, there are some fundamental differences in the national systems of the individual European countries, both when it comes to their structures and the benefits available under the different types of social insurance.
All in all, there is no harmonisation in the field of social security in Europe. Authority lies with the national legislators.
