There is a wide spectrum of grants and subsidies for music artists of various contemporary genres in Austria, ranging from composition stipends to sound recording production and travel allowances. Apart from the state sector, there is a number of other institutions, such as the social and cultural institutions of the collecting societies, or the Austrian Music Fund.

The promotion of music by the FM of the Arts is, in fact, governed by the Law on the Promotion of the Arts, which focuses on contemporary forms of art.9 The actual grants show a strong focus on traditional forms of music, in particular on classical music. Based on a survey from 2008/2009, the Austrian Report on Musical Diversity identified a marked focus in the field of classical music, which receives more than 90% of all subsidies, especially owing to the funding for the Federal Theatres (State Opera, Volksoper). This ratio has not changed fundamentally to date.
