Funding for Literature
In 1970/71, the reform of the Großer österreichischer Staatspreis, previously of symbolic rather than substantial significance, heralded the emergence of systematic literature funding in Austria. The following years saw the establishment of annual grants and initiatives such as “readings at schools”, and a “Catalogue of Cultural Policy Measures” provided a comprehensive funding structure benefitting authors, publishers, magazines, associations and events. In Austria, responsibility for cultural funding lies with the individual Länder, and the Republic of Austria is second in line when it comes to supporting art and culture. Most of the time the Länder fulfil their responsibilities mainly through supporting major art and culture institutions within their jurisdiction, but transfer the main burden of promoting cutting-edge art and culture to the Republic. When it comes to literature funding, the Länder take the backseat to the central authorities.
