Collecting Societies

Since the merger of LVG – Literarische Verwertungsgesellschaft (printed publications) and Literar-Mechana (dissemination by technical media) in 2006, there has only been one collecting society for literature in Austria. In the process, LVG has been made co-proprietor of Literar-Mechana. Given the boost of dissemination by mass media and means other than books, broadcast or performance, Literar-Mechana has become a central institution for authors and a constant partner in copyright conflicts, such as the international disputes with Google on the subject of Google Books between 2009 and 2011 and the Austrian domestic conflict about storage media compensation between 2012 and 2015. Literar-Mechana is an organisation for literary authors, journalists and authors of scientific publications. Their scope of activities also includes publishing houses of any category and the legal successors of authors. AKM/Austro-Mechana is the collecting society responsible for music lyrics.
